Nigeria
Meet DJ Obi. Obi is a Nigerian disc jockey, currently on the road to make making history at the Sao Café, in Lagos, as a Guinness world record holder for the world’s longest marathon club DJing.
On Wednesday at exactly 11:30pm Lagos time, Obi kicked off his campaign to break the record, which is currently held by Polish DJ Norbert Selmaj Norberto Loco, and which was set in Dublin, Ireland in 2014 standing at 200 hours.
“We are having so much fun and I can come here at anytime, there is no requirement for entry, just as long as you show support and love to see Dj Obi breaking the world record,“says Henrietta, a Nigerian resident.
As Obi strives to do what’s never been done before, there’s no mistaking that it’s an arduous task. Already, clips from the venue show signs of fatigue and little cracks, but Obi is not just about to quit.
“My technique was not a secret. I downloaded about 200 gigabytes of house music, that will take me to about the eighth day, which is what I do every day, a lot of house. And then towards the end I can go to more open format style and play hip hop and everything else,” DJ Obi says.
DJ Obi’s challenge will hope to tell a decent tale of Nigeria’s entertainment industry and the growth of pop culture in the country, reports Nigerian website Naij.com.
The site further adds that above all, the project could help cast the country’s image in a positive light especially at a critical time when tales of corruption, terrorism, and socioeconomic imbalances have cast a huge blot on Nigeria’s international reputation.
